Within Freemasonry, ritual is far more than memorized words and practiced movements - it is the living heartbeat of the Craft. Every degree is designed to communicate timeless lessons through symbolism, cadence, and solemn delivery. When performed with precision and sincerity, the ritual becomes a powerful teaching tool, capable of leaving a lasting impression on the candidate and shaping their Masonic journey from the very beginning.

Someone must lead the Lodge, and so it has been since time immemorial. Brothers rise to the Oriental Chair to serve as Worshipful Masters - a title they carry for the rest of their lives as Worshipful Brothers (Past Masters). They deserve the utmost respect for their dedication, service, and labor. They are the beacons of every Lodge throughout the world, the custodians of authority, and the guardians of Masonic principles and values.

A great deal goes into maintaining a respectable home. Our Lodge is our home, and rest assured that considerable effort is invested in keeping it both respectable and fully functional - for ourselves today and for future brethren.

Every part of the Lodge requires care and ongoing maintenance. Broken items must be repaired or replaced, and many systems require annual inspections. The elevator must be certified, the water heaters must remain functional and up to code, the fob access system requires renewal and eventual replacement with a newer model, and the heating system needs regular checkups. Windows and doors must be properly sealed to withstand freezing temperatures, and the carpets require routine cleaning. These are just a few of the many responsibilities involved.

All of these tasks fall under the watchful oversight of the Trustees. Several committees work tirelessly to ensure that everything remains in proper working order and that nothing is overlooked. Brother Jon Carpenter, President of the Trustees, spends countless hours assessing issues, meeting with contractors, and obtaining quotes for necessary work. It is a demanding and never-ending responsibility, and he is doing an outstanding job.

All of the Trustees deserve recognition for their dedication in keeping our Lodge - and the tenants who share the building - in excellent condition. Most recently, repairs were completed on the water heaters in the basement, and a leak in one of the tenant spaces was identified and promptly repaired.

The leak at the Moses Eye center was promptly reapired. Our renters are lucky to have a bunch of responsible masons to care of their shops. 

The Lodge building improvement project continues into the new year of 2026 without pause, reflecting our ongoing commitment to preserving and enhancing the beauty of our Lodge. All materials needed to complete the East wall have now arrived, and the contractors have already begun work installing the columns and the stone pattern. This phase of construction is expected to take approximately two weeks and, by the time you read this, should be fully completed.

On January 12, the officers of Porter Lodge convened in the dining room for their first officers’ meeting of the year. The newly installed Worshipful Master outlined his vision for the year, first in broad terms and then with greater detail. A variety of initiatives were discussed, with a strong emphasis on strengthening fellowship among the brethren and their families. To that end, several inclusive events were proposed, including a movie night at the Lodge, shared dinners, the annual picnic, and similar gatherings.

INDIANAPOLIS – On Saturday, January 10, Freemasons from across the state gathered at the historic Scottish Rite Cathedral for the annual Founders Day celebration. The event served as both a reflection on our storied past and a bold roadmap for the future of the Craft in Indiana.

The weekend began early for many, as Brothers traveled to the circle city on Friday evening. These informal gatherings in the downtown area provided a vital opportunity for fraternizing and strengthening brotherly bonds—the very essence of our fraternity—before the formal proceedings commenced the following morning.

Social media—defined here as all electronic messaging and social platforms—is a powerful tool for connection. The Grand Lodge of Indiana embraces these technologies and supports their regular use by our Brethren.

As I look back on the moment I was asked to become a Lodge officer, I can still feel the weight of that decision pressing on my heart. Fear was my first companion—fear of the unknown, fear of failing those who trusted me, and fear of stepping into a role that demanded more than I believed I could give.

Freemasonry came to America through Europe, with England and Scotland being two distinguished locations of early Speculative Masonry. Christianity was the main religion in those regions during that time period. St. John the Baptist had long been associated with Freemasonry, extending back to references of St. John's Masons throughout medieval Europe during the time of Operative Masonry.
